The traditional resume must evolve. It fails to provide a clear picture of a candidate's true skills and capabilities, making it difficult for employers to make informed hiring decisions. Today, HR Open is releasing the Learning and Employment Record Resume Standard (LER-RS) , a new standard designed to help address these challenges. The Learning Employment Records LER is a digital record, storing both formal and informal learning and employment experiences, therefore providing a more complete picture of someone's skills and potential.

The LER-RS provides a structured and verifiable format for showcasing skills and experiences. This makes it easier for employers to scan and analyze resumes, and to identify the candidates who are the best fit for their open positions.

The LER-RS is a free and open standard developed by the HR Open Standards Consortium, LLC. It is based on the following key principles:

  • Structured format: The LER-RS provides a consistent and organized layout for resume data, making it easier for employers to scan and analyze.
  • Skills-based focus: The emphasis is placed on highlighting demonstrable skills and competencies, rather than simply listing past job titles and duties.
  • Digital verification: Credentials and achievements can be linked to verifiable sources, such as digital badges and learning records, enhancing their credibility.

Benefits of the LER-RS for Businesses:

  • Improved hiring decisions: The LER-RS provides more information about candidates' skills and experience, improving hiring decisions.
  • Reduced bias: The structured format of the LER-RS helps to reduce bias in the hiring process.
  • Faster time to hire: The LER-RS makes it easier to compare candidates and identify the best fit, to fill open positions faster.
  • Increased employee satisfaction: Improve employee satisfaction and reduce turnover by identifying candidates that are a better fit for the position.

Benefits of the LER-RS for workers and job applicants:

  • More comprehensive representation: LER-RS the showcasing of the full range of skills and experiences,, including informal learning and volunteer work, which traditional resumes often leave out.
  • Increased discoverability: Using standardized formats, there is an increase in visibility to potential employers searching for specific skills and experiences.
  • Focus on skills and achievements: LER-RS shifts the focus from traditional qualifications to demonstrated skills and achievements, highlighting strengths regardless of traditional educational background..

The LER-RS is a powerful tool that can help improve the hiring process and build a more skilled and qualified workforce. Contact us today to learn more about using the LER-RS.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the following funders and supporters for their invaluable contributions to the development of the LER-RS:

  • The US Chamber of Commerce Foundation
  • T3 Innovation Network
  • 1EdTech

Without their support, the LER-RS would not be possible. We are grateful for their commitment to improving the hiring process for businesses and job seekers alike.
